Sometimes a girl just has to man up and do what needs to be done. Carrying a bouquet of flowers the size of a small child, I returned to the hospital to visit Laura and baby Grace. Not that seeing my sister and brand-new niece was a hardship, rather I was still having flashbacks of the birth and, quite frankly, the gore of it.

“You called Galloway.” I greeted Laura with a kiss on the cheek before laying the flowers on the trolley at the foot of her bed.

“I did,” she admitted freely.

“Why?”

“Come sit.” She patted the side of the bed. I peeked in at Grace in her crib then eased myself onto the edge of the bed. “Audrey, you didn’t see your face. You did and said all the right things, but girl, there was not a lick of color in your cheeks, and you had a totally freaked-out look of terror in your eyes. As soon as Brad turned up, you couldn’t get out of here quick enough.”

And here I was thinking I was being thoughtful and giving them time alone with their new family member. I pursed my lips then blew out a breath. “Okay, fine, that’s true. I guess I wasn’t prepared for it.”

Laura held my hand. “Of course not. None of us were. What you witnessed today was a very fast labor. An hour and a half from start to finish. That isn’t typical. I get that it was probably frightening. And you had no time to prepare yourself mentally.”

Very true. I had limited knowledge of childbirth. Obviously, I understand the workings of where babies come from, I’m not that naive, but if I’d ever expected to be a birthing partner. I’d have put in some groundwork, watched some videos, read some books, joined Laura at birthing classes. But I was never expecting to be someone’s birthing partner. Ever. So, I’d done none of those things.

“But why call Galloway?” I wailed because now it was on his radar, and I knew at some point I was going to have to talk to him about this whole baby thing, and I simply wasn’t ready for it. Even now, chatting with Laura, my mind hadn’t been changed. I was not sure I wanted children. And I just knew if those words left my lips, my family would begin a campaign to change my mind. And who knows, maybe it would work, but it was entirely unfair having to deal with it while on a caffeine fast.

“Because I was worried about you, and I couldn’t be there to make sure you were okay. But he could be.”

Typical of my family. Their hearts are always in the right place, but their actions often messed things up for me.

Laura frowned. “Are you upset that I called him?”

I half shrugged. “I just wished you hadn’t.”

“Why?” she asked, astonished. “Is everything okay with you two?”

Gah, this was going from bad to worse. Rather than answer, I turned my attention to the baby. “Is she awake? Can I hold her?”

Laura immediately turned to mush.
